You might be wondering, what exactly is exhilaration, and how does it apply to your life? It's more than just the sensation of acceleration when you press the gas pedal—it's about igniting momentum in a way that propels you beyond the familiar and into the extraordinary. Exhilaration is the spark that jolts you out of routine, pushing you toward growth, passion, and impact. It's about challenging yourself, embracing change, and inspiring not just your journey but the lives of those around you.
Too often, we fall into patterns of monotony. We get caught in a predictable loop, where days blur together, and nothing seems to change. The habits we've created become comfortable, and we unconsciously live in autopilot mode. But here's the truth: living in comfort often means we're not truly living at all. We get so accustomed to what's familiar that we miss out on the richness of life itself.
That's where exhilaration comes in. It's about stepping outside your routine and doing something different—something that challenges you, pushes you, and even puts some reasonable fear in you. This could be as simple as trying a new activity or as transformative as traveling to a foreign country on a mission trip. The point is to do something that jolts you out of the mundane and brings new experiences into your life.
One of the easiest ways to experience exhilaration is to get out of your comfort zone. Comfort zones are like invisible walls that keep us contained and stagnant. They make life predictable but also prevent us from growing. So, if you want to feel truly alive, you need to take risks and embrace the unknown.
But here's the thing: as we push forward and challenge ourselves, we can quickly feel overwhelmed by the uncertainty of it all. That's where God's role comes in. Learning to depend on Him in these moments of growth is key. It's easy to think we must handle everything ourselves and rely on our strength. But the truth is, we were never meant to walk through life alone. When we trust the Lord Jesus, we discover He is our constant source of strength, guidance, and peace. As we step out in faith, we can rest assured that He will be right beside us, providing what we need when we need it.
When we truly learn to depend on God, we begin to experience exhilaration in a way that is not just about tangible growth but spiritual growth. We start to see how our small actions, when guided by God's will, can make a significant impact on the world within us and around us. It's not just about breaking free from routine; it's about living with purpose, knowing that God is using us to make a difference.
Imagine this: You've never been zip-lining before. The thought of it terrifies you, but something inside tells you to take the leap. As you stand at the edge, the adrenaline rushes through your body. Your heart races. For a moment, you wonder if you should turn back. But then, you let go—and in that split second, everything changes. The wind in your hair, the breathtaking view from above, the pure exhilaration—it's unlike anything you've experienced before.
Now, imagine applying this sense of exhilaration to other parts of your life. Go visit a community or a minister to a group of people you wouldn't normally interact with. Maybe it's a challenging neighborhood in your city or perhaps a group of people with different values than you. Volunteer, listen, and serve in ways you never have, even when the thought of stepping out and sharing the gospel with strangers feels overwhelming. Or you may feel the call to go on a mission trip, leaving behind the comforts of home for the challenges of a foreign land. In all these cases, you will experience exhilaration—your mind, body, and spirit will be stretched in ways you never anticipated.
So, why does exhilaration matter? It matters because it forces us to think, reflect, and adjust our faith. When we step out of our comfort zones, we encounter new situations that don't always come with an immediate solution. We're challenged to stop, think, and respond thoughtfully. This pause before reacting is a crucial skill that many of us overlook. In our day-to-day lives, we often react instinctively without taking the time to process or reflect. We're so used to our routines that we don't stop to consider other perspectives or possible responses.
But exhilaration gives us the chance to break that cycle. It helps us think critically, make conscious choices, and learn to adapt. In these moments, we grow as individuals and become more capable of making an impact on the world around us. We stop being passive participants in life and begin to engage actively, bringing about real change.
This is how I became a missionary. Decades ago, I was terrified at the thought of speaking to a complete stranger about my Savior. I was going through the motions of everyday life, but I wasn't helping others bring Christ into their own. Then, finally, one day, I stepped out in fear—my heart pounding, my hands trembling. I handed my first gospel tract to a woman and nervously said, "I just want you to know Jesus loves you," before quickly walking away, shaking. Over time, I kept taking that same risk—passing out gospel tracts and, eventually, taking the time to talk with people. After thousands of opportunities, I've learned how to speak clearly to all kinds of people, so much so that most are willing to engage in a gospel conversation with me. The fear is still there, but the exhilaration of doing something with eternal significance is a joy beyond words. Now, decades later, I can hardly believe I'm living out my calling as a missionary in a foreign land.
The journey from fear to faith-filled action is the very essence of exhilaration. If we truly want to live fulfilling, purposeful lives, we need exhilaration—the fuel that propels us forward when we feel stuck. It's about pushing through the walls of complacency and embracing the unknown, even when it feels uncomfortable. When we do this, we're not just changing our own lives, but we're impacting the lives of others as well. We're becoming agents of change, of hope, and of love.
So, what's stopping you? Step out. Try something new. Challenge yourself in ways you've never done before. Let exhilaration shape your life, and in turn, watch how you learn to depend on God more and begin to influence the world around you. Because when you're moving forward—living with purpose and passion—life becomes anything but ordinary. And that's the kind of life we were meant to live.
