These questions are understandable, given the apparent dangers and risks involved. But my response is always the same: No. And the reason is simple—I have God's peace.
When I walk the streets where darkness seems to prevail, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the brokenness and hopelessness. Nevertheless, there's a profound assurance that comes from serving Christ amid adversity. It's an undeniable peace that comes from knowing I am exactly where God wants me to be, doing exactly what He has called me to do. It's the peace that comes from knowing that nothing can harm us until the task God has entrusted us with is complete because God is with us every step of the way.
But this peace is not exclusive to those who serve in the most difficult environments. It's available to all who choose to follow Christ and to serve Him wherever they are. Whether it's ministering to outcasts on the streets, serving within your local church, or simply being a beacon of hope and love in your everyday interactions, the assurance of God's peace remains the same. God’s peace is where we find a shield of protection and an understanding of invincibility that transcends earthly fears and uncertainties.
Yes, there are risks involved in serving and ministering to those in gangs and addictions just as there are challenges wherever you are. But when you have God's peace, those risks pale in comparison to the reward of seeing lives transformed by Christ’s Word and grace.
So, am I afraid to die? No, because I know that as long as I am serving God, my life is in His hands. And there's no greater assurance than that.
But for those who aren’t serving God, I pity them because they are left to navigate this world with uncertainty and fear of death. Without the anchor of God's peace, the specter of death looms over people, casting a shadow of doubt and anxiety.
In life, challenges and uncertainties are universal, regardless of whether we are serving Christ or not. Reflecting on this, I’ve come to a personal decision: I’d rather embrace God's peace and direction than pursue my own desires without it. This understanding prompts me to ask you: Have you pondered your own journey? While challenges are unavoidable, do you have God’s peace in serving Christ? If you find yourself lacking God’s peace, then I extend an invitation. Would you consider committing to serving Christ within your community? Will you choose to embrace the profound peace and assurance that comes from wholeheartedly serving Christ? For in Jesus, we discover not merely peace and security, but also purpose, meaning, and a love that surpasses all boundaries.
