But what sets apart a great leader? Is it his title or the size of his following? Not quite. Great leadership often reveals itself in everyday moments—in the warmth of a home, the pulse of a community, and the sanctuary of a church.
To grasp the essence of greatness in leadership, we can look no further than Jesus Christ. His leadership stands unrivaled among all leaders throughout history. His leadership was anything but conventional. Rather than imposing His divine plan upon the masses, His approach was simply, "Follow me." And people followed, not out of obligation, but because His life exemplified His teachings, and He invested Himself into others. In a feat unparalleled by any other leader, He put His life in men. No leader has ever put all of himself into someone else, yet Christ did so unreservedly.
Following in the footsteps of Jesus was the apostle Paul, whose life illuminated a wealth of insight into leadership. A quick study in Acts 20 gives us a treasure trove of wisdom on what defines qualities of exceptional leadership, which I aim to briefly expound upon.
Did you know being a great leader is not necessarily about the spotlight? Some of the greatest leaders are those whom the masses have never seen—ordinary folks leading small groups of people in their own corners of the world. They may not hold fancy titles, but they certainly shine in their community among those lives they touch.
In Acts 20, we discover a profound truth about a great leader—it’s not merely about holding authority; it’s about investing in others—not just with words, but with time, resources, and undivided attention. A great leader attentively listens to the heartbeat of those around him, and as a result, people recognize they are important and this fosters a sense of belonging and purpose that draws people to him.
A great leader prioritizes active listening to understand others. His commitment to truly know and serve others drives him to a devotion in deeper prayer with God. For him, prayer isn't just a routine; it's a wellspring of strength and clarity, empowering him to navigate daily challenges. He recognizes his limitations and turns to God frequently for guidance and wisdom.
A great leader regularly observes those around him, developing the ability to identify the unique gifts and talents of individuals. He then enables others to use these gifts by creating opportunities for others to shine, patiently nurturing and empowering them to unleash their full potential.
Moreover, a great leader is characterized by his passionate heart for his work. He possesses a sense of purpose in fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him by God. Such a leader is not inclined toward laziness; instead, his dedication fuels an inner fire that radiates from his soul into action. He understands that without passion, pursuing a task is futile. It is, therefore, in the best interest of individuals to seek endeavors that align with their heart.
Each of us possesses unique personality traits beneficial in leadership; however, the hallmark of a great leader is unwavering tenacity—a refusal to quit or be swayed by discouragement or setbacks. A great leader perseveres, and is driven by a determination to fulfill his purpose, undeterred by chaos or opposition. This steadfast resolve propels him forward, even when faced with adversity because he understands the work must go on.
In addition to tenacity, a great leader radiates energy—both physical and mental. He possesses the stamina to persist through long hours and fatigue, and the mental curiosity to expand his mind. He's consistently finding time to reading and learning, replenishing his mind with deeper insights, understanding, and wisdom to grow in becoming a better leader.
Great leadership is characterized by unwavering integrity—a commitment to honesty and transparency in all dealings. He is trusted by others because he is able to handle responsibilities with the utmost care; he fosters trust and respect among peers. His integrity serves as a cornerstone, providing a solid foundation upon which meaningful relationships and collaborations can thrive. With his unwavering commitment to honesty, he creates an environment where others feel safe and confident in relying on his leadership.
In addition, humility stands as a bedrock among the most crucial characteristics because it always precedes exaltation. It is the mark of a great leader, an attribute without which one's journey towards leadership remains incomplete. Consider the example of Jesus Christ: He left His heavenly throne, where He was surrounded by daily praises, to dwell among those who cursed Him on Earth. Christ went to the depth of humility, and now, He is at the height of exaltation in Heaven. For those who aspire to achieve greatness and achieve significant accomplishments, embracing humility is imperative.
A great leader is rooted in the rock of Jesus Christ; he recognizes Christ as the ultimate authority, refusing to adhere to fleeting cultural trends. All that he does is established upon Christ's doctrine. He lives a manner of life submitted to Christ and His Holy Bible. In every aspect of life, this leader relies on Christ and His Word as the ultimate and unwavering authority.
A wonderful characteristic that pours out of a great leader is his openness to help others by his generosity. He is a giver. He gives freely from his ability. He does not covet what others possess but is content with the blessings bestowed upon him by God. His heart is inclined towards sharing these blessings in order to uplift and encourage those around him.
The true mark of a great leader lies in the inspiration he evokes in others, reflected in the followers who are drawn to his example. Through his exampleship, he ignites a spark of potential in those around him, encouraging others to strive for greatness in their own lives. The presence of eager followers is a testament to one's leadership; without them, one merely holds authority rather than inspiring genuine growth and change.
As we reflect on these qualities, I pose this question: Do you aspire to be a great leader? Do you recognize the qualities of a great leader within yourself? By God’s grace, we can all become the great leaders our homes, churches, and communities need—guiding others with a determined heart, inspiring with purpose, and leaving a legacy for this generation and the next to come.
