While birthdays are widely celebrated, we must consider whether such traditions align with our faith. Interestingly, nowhere in God's Word does it instruct us to commemorate birthdays. Instead, Scripture draws our attention to events of far greater importance—such as the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ—and sets forth seven key festivals that remind us of God's redemptive plan, His provision, and His promises. This raises a thought-provoking question: How did our modern world come to place so much emphasis on birthdays, particularly those of Jesus, and, intriguingly, what some refer to as "The Devil's Birthday"?
While birthdays are now celebrated globally as significant milestones in people's lives, this wasn't always the case. In ancient times, birthdays were often associated with pagan rituals, a practice where the spiritual realm was believed to have a direct influence on one's life and destiny, particularly on a person's birthday.
In contrast, God's Word emphasizes the importance of memorializing sacred events, such as the Passover and the Day of Atonement—occasions meant to deepen our understanding of Christ rather than elevate our own egos. Today, many Christians celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th, though historical evidence and several scriptures suggest Jesus was born in the autumn. I've explored this in-depth in a separate blog post, but this distinction matters because the world has largely commercialized Christmas, often overshadowing its true significance.
The devil, ever cunning, has not only distorted Christmas into a materialistic event but has also ensured that the world commemorates a day dedicated to his kingdom—Halloween. As a culture, we have embraced Halloween, a day steeped in the celebration of darkness, fear, and death. This holiday, increasingly normalized, reveals a deeper spiritual problem. Halloween, with its roots in ancient pagan practices, glorifies the very elements Christ came to conquer—sin, fear, death, and evil. While the Bible never commands us to observe a day for Satan, Halloween has become a cultural symbol of his influence.
It's no coincidence that this day falls so close to traditional harvest festivals, which were associated with pagan rituals honoring various deities. For this reason, some Christians rightfully refer to Halloween as the "Devil's Birthday." If we view Christmas as a celebration of Christ's birth, then it's reasonable to view Halloween as the day Satan's counterfeit kingdom is celebrated.
Satan has always been a master of imitation. The Bible calls him the father of lies in John 8:44, and one of his most effective strategies is to counterfeit God's truths. For instance, Christmas is intended to celebrate the birth of our Savior, yet it has been overtaken by consumerism, materialism, and increasingly secular ideals rooted in paganism. In stark contrast, Halloween has evolved into a global phenomenon that glorifies fear, demons, and the occult—elements that stand in direct opposition to the love, joy, and peace found in Christ Jesus. By normalizing Halloween as harmless fun, Satan ensures that his influence permeates the culture. Families who might otherwise never dabble in the occult suddenly open doors to dark forces by participating in what they perceive to be an innocent celebration.
As Christians, we must exercise discernment regarding the holidays we observe. Just as we honor Christ's resurrection with Resurrection Day and commemorate His death through the Lord's Supper, we need to ask ourselves: What are we truly celebrating with Halloween? Are we unintentionally glorifying a kingdom of darkness, or are we standing firm in the light of Christ? This isn't to say that birthdays or cultural holidays are inherently evil; instead, we must evaluate the significance behind them. Satan is always seeking to steal what belongs to God, and if we're not vigilant, we may find ourselves participating in customs that do not align with God's will.
Ultimately, the question isn't whether we should celebrate birthdays or holidays but rather what these occasions represent. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I am committed to educating myself and those around me about the profound significance of Christ's birth while illuminating the dangers associated with Halloween—a day that Satan uses to deceive and distract us.
We must not be ignorant of the devil's clever and cunning schemes; instead, we should remain aware of the true intentions behind what is celebrated in our culture. We are called to distinguish between the holy and the profane, the clean and the unclean. God has called us apart to live in a way that reflects Christ's light in a world consumed in darkness.
Let us be vigilant in honoring the events God has commanded us to remember while steering clear of celebrations that glorify what Christ came to conquer. By doing so, we embrace our identity as ambassadors of Jesus Christ, illuminating the path for others to escape the trickery and snares of Satan and his dark kingdom.
