But why is prayer essential for us? When we humble ourselves before God in prayer, our time with Him unveils the depth of our arrogance and pride, exposing sin hiding within our hearts and diverting our attention from God. Through this communion with the Lord, His holiness begins to illuminate from within our hearts, revealing our self-willed anxious thoughts and deepening our understanding of our desperate need for God's guidance.
Recently, a profound experience deeply impacted me and reinforced this truth. While I was at the gym, I received an urgent text from a friend in the USA, requesting immediate prayers for an emergency situation. At that moment, I sensed a prompting from within to bow before God in prayer, right there in the gym. Perhaps others thought I was stretching, nevertheless, I got on the floor, bowed my head in reverence before God, and offered immediate prayers.
As I bowed in reverence, I sensed the Spirit saying: "Ask Me to turn off the music.” So, with sincerity, I asked God, "Would you please shut off that filthy music? Lord, You deserve undivided attention." Within two seconds, the gym's sound system went silent. It was a powerful affirmation of God's presence and responsiveness to the urgent need for prayer.
Before I could even begin to intercede for my friend, I found myself overwhelmed with gratitude, praising and worshiping God for His unmistakable intervention. In the silence, I worshipped Christ Jesus, acknowledging His sovereignty, and thanked Him for His control over every detail of our lives. This experience served as a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness and His attentiveness to our prayers, even amidst the noise of our daily lives.
When we come before Lord in prayer, it's important to remember that prayer is a two-way conversation. While we share our needs and concerns with Him, it's equally important, if not more, to listen for His guidance and direction. God desires to guide our prayers, prompting us to pray specifically and with intentionality. General prayers often yield only a general understanding of God’s response. The more specific our prayers, the more specific our understanding will be from God.
Moreover, as we approach the presence of God, it’s crucial to fill our hearts with gratitude and worship Him. God delights in the heartfelt praise of His people and is drawn to prayers that are selfless. We ought to make it a priority to pray for others too. When we intercede on behalf of others, placing their needs above our own, our hearts are transformed, leading us to live lives of generosity and service. It’s through selfless prayers that we witness God’s marvelous work beyond ourselves.
So, the next time you find yourself doubting whether God hears your prayers, remember this testimony. God is not only listening but also actively responding to the cries of His people. Trust in His faithfulness, and persist to seek Him fervently in prayer. Praise and worship God, and intercede for others who need help. Then, with renewed faith and purpose, step out from the place of prayer and get involved to serve those in need in your community.
